On a whim, perhaps because dolls played virtually no role in my growing up,I began to photograph them. I have elected to photograph dolls in a documentary style similar to a common mug shot or a passport photo. This familiar head shot perspective is incongruent with the doll because of its typically animated face. Photographing dolls in this perspective makes people uncomfortable knowing that something isn't quite right with them.
Making portraits of dolls reveals hidden narratives that change frame-by-frame like dreams and memories. The collective assemblage of these portraits in mass is essential to the work as a whole. The Doll series explores the human experience through diverse portraits. Dolls represent different things to different people but are used in childhood as a role playing conduit of adulthood and observed experiences.
A doll is a model of a human being, often used as a toy for children. Dolls have traditionally been used in magic and religious rituals throughout the world. When Greek and Roman girls got married they would dedicate their doll to a goddess.Traditional dolls are sometimes used as children's playthings, but they may also have spiritual, magical and ritual value. There is no defined line between spiritual dolls and toys. In some cultures dolls that had been used in rituals were given to children. They were also used in children's education and as carriers of cultural heritage. In other cultures dolls were considered too laden with magical powers to allow children to play with them.
The doll also is a representation of life which is ironic as they portray death better. I think this is an interesting way of looking at these images as they are also trying to capture “life” but end up capturing a sort of death.
Dolls fascinate and scare me. Individually handcrafted or manufactured in multiples, dolls are assigned roles by the people who own them. Some people out grow them as toys; other collect dolls as keepsakes, investments or companions. As doll collectors select, purchase, arrange, and alter dolls to suit their tastes, the collectors create a personal narrative. Within these steps, collectors piece together narratives about a private identity.
